Boqueron Bay Beach, formally named Balneario de Boqueron, located on the beach town of Cabo Rojo, is one of the top favorite beaches for families on the main island of Puerto Rico. Boqueron Beach encapsulates dreams of Puerto Rico…particularly for locals who have moved away from the island and often reminisce of childhood memories at the beach.
On this beach, everything is simple, laid back and beautiful. Boqueron beach offers over a mile of light golden sand, water in various shades ranging from dark navy blue to light turquoise like glass. There are hundreds of palm trees, mixed with almond trees and flaming Flamboyan trees offering plenty of shade and adding to that postcard perfect scene.
Note: Due to damage from Hurricane Maria, Balneario of Boqueron is currently closed until further notice. The gates are open, but no cars are allowed in the park, you may walk in or ride a bicycle. Walkers are back to using the park as usual in the mornings. The water is very clear, the beach is now wider, but there are still many trees to be cleaned up along the shore and the facilities suffered much damage. There are no services or facilities available.
Balneario de Boqueron is one of the Blue Flag beaches in Puerto Rico, a coveted award given to beaches around the world that meet very strict standards, particularly water safety and quality.
From your beach chair or hammock, enjoy views of rolling hills, bright white sailboats, kayakers, people doing water sports, boats coming and going from the seaside village of Boqueron.
During weekdays, the atmosphere is quiet and relaxed with adults enjoying a morning walk on the beach. During the winter months you’ll find a large group of retirees from the states walking and enjoying an active lifestyle under the sun. The tourist scene is low here, the west coast is still considered an “unbeaten path”. On the weekends, families from all over the island head to Boqueron for a fun filled day. It’s a great place for tourists and travelers to observe real island life at the beach. You’ll see locals enjoying themselves with friends and family, listening to music, dancing on the sand, picnicking and enjoying a variety of water sports.
This beach is perfect for walking and jogging. You can start your walk straight down the entrance, you’ll pass the management office and marine police. As you continue you’ll be walking by mangrove trees lining the lagoon of Caño Boquernon. Be sure to make a pause at the dock to admire the mangroves and the beautiful lagoon. Keep walking and circle around the villas, you’ll be rewarded by cooling breezes as you walk along the shores of the Bay of Boqueron. At the end of your walk, sit down on the sand, soak up some Vitamin D under palm trees and Flamboyan trees. Finish up by jumping on the water from the pier.
If you love searching for seashells, you’ll have fun looking through mounds of baby sea shells washing ashore.
There are many shallow beach spots with clear water, perfect for toddlers to safely play as schools of tiny fish swim around their feet.
And everyday of the year, the day ends with a romantic colorful sunset.
After a fun filled day at the beach, head over to the Poblado of Boqueron, the one way street along the coast closes down at sunset for great food and nightlife.
