The main attraction of La Parguera, a village in the town of Lajas, was the bioluminescent bay, also called the “phosphorescent bay”. We say was because sadly due to overdevelopment, light pollution, lack of protection and poor enforcement of the rules that do exist, bioluminescence is very poor compared to how it was 25 years ago. We personally can’t help but feel anger that this precious natural wonder was not protected and may cease to exist completely in the next decades. The only way we recommend touring the bio bay is by kayak.
The bio bay in La Parguera is the most accessible in Puerto Rico out of the 3. Puerto Rico has 3 bioluminescent bays, the second brightest is in Fajardo, the most magical and brightest in the world is Mosquito Bay in Vieques, one of the offshore islands of Puerto Rico.
Following we have included a map of the Puerto Rico Bio Bay Locations below as well as an interactive moon phase calendar to use in trip planning.
