Picnic with Million Dollar Views to El Morro and the City Walls in Old San Juan – Isla de Cabras Recreational Park – Toa Baja, Puerto Rico

Be sure to visit Isla de Cabras, a little island extending over the bay of San Juan where you can enjoy an afternoon walk and have a relaxing picnic with the most scenic views of El Morro, the city walls.  You’ll see mega cruise ships and industrial ships enter the bay that 500 years ago was so guarded by the Spanish with El Morro in conjunction with the onsite Fortin of San Juan de la Cruz.

The little island offers a snack bar, picnic and restroom facilities. Park is free to access but there’s a parking fee.  The beaches are not for bathing, this is a place to relax, take pictures, enjoy the views, visit the historic site and get some exercise.  If you’re a tourist, it’s a nice stop after touring the Bacardi Rum Factory. Bring your swimsuit along and visit the Blue Flag beach of Punta Salinas. Not too far from here you can also enjoy the beaches of Manati.

Visit Fort San Juan de la Cruz – This nice recreational park is houses Fort San Juan de la Cruz (also known as El Cañuelo), designated as part of the San Juan National Historic Site. This small fort doesn’t get much attention or visits but it should.  Fort San Juan de la Cruz may be small in size but it was very important in the defence of the San Juan  Bay as it worked in conjunction with El Morro in Old San Juan.  The fort is closed but you can appreciate it’s exterior architecture.
